Match report: Year 7 Boys County Football Semi-Final v Kingstone HS
Our Year 7 Boys Football team put in an excellent performance to progress through to the County Schools Cup final at Edgar Street, with a 4-3 win over Kingstone High School that evening.
Kingstone took the lead on 5 minutes, but St Mary’s came back with two really well taken goals from St Mary’s centre forward, Timve B, with both goals coming by way of well delivered corners from right wing, Jonny L.
After a well-balanced first half, whoever got the next goal was always going to be crucial, and second half substitute, Bontond G, made an immediate impact, scoring within the first 3 minutes of the restart following an excellent dribble into the opposition box by Timve, and this put St Mary’s 3-1 up.
Then on 10 minutes, following another probing run, Timve was tripped in the area by an opposition defender, and Jonny L stepped up to calmly put away the resulting penalty to put St Mary’s 4-1 up.
With the game won, pupil team manager, James G, deserves a lot of credit for rolling on an amazing 9 different players during the course of the second half. This naturally checked our momentum a little, and the nerves jangled slightly when Kingstone scored two very late goals to make it 4-3 on the night, but in reality this was a much more comfortable win than it sounds.
With so many good performances, it is very hard to pick one man of the match, but worthy of particular mention were Timve and Jonny for their highly skilled attacking play, to Jacob W for his workmate in centre midfield, and to Alfie W for his commanding presence at the heart of the defence.
