Food Technology
Delicious aromas emanate from the Food Technology Room most days of the week as St Mary’s students prepare something delicious to take home in the afternoon. St Mary’s has a superbly appointed teaching kitchen where students learn the valuable life skills needed to feed themselves and their families nutritious, balanced meals. Students learn the basic skills of weighing, cutting, mixing, cooking, testing, cooking, cooling and storing food safely through a range of imaginative dishes. Special diets and allergies are incorporated into the programme of recipes cooked each week. Food Technology lessons are focused on practical skills and include demonstrations, testing and experimenting.
Key Stage 3
Year 7 - Chef School. Exciting dishes, based on recipes from seven different chefs increasing in complexity during the term are. Students will learn to become confident and competent cooks.
Year 8 – Master Chef Meals. Designing and making main meal that can feed a family, students cook dishes from around the world earning about herbs and spices. This module builds on the skills and confidence students mastered in year 7.
Year 9 – Take Aways. The Year 9 project is based around popular take away dishes with adaptations for diet and healthy eating. Students have more autonomy in the dishes they make and are encouraged extend their skills and use of ingredients.
Years 10 and 11 (Level 1 and 2 Hospitality and catering)
The Hospitality and Catering course is for learners with an interest in food, cookery and catering. It will provide the opportunity to learn a broad range of practical skills to a high level.
Through theory and practical lessons you will gain an understanding of how ingredients work together and the nutrition needed for a healthy lifestyle.
Part of the course explores the hospitality industry and work place settings and there is the opportunity to take a level 2 Food Handling City and Guilds Certificate enabling you to work in hospitality and catering on a full or part time basis.
